Literary Focus Question # 6
Don Anselmo didn't reveal who "owns" the trees at his first visit because of many reasons. Firstly, he thought he doesn't "own" the trees so it wasn't his right to tell the lawyer who really "owns" the trees. The Americans thought they got the land and house for a cheap price, but instead, they got all these children annoyed them for another price to pay. Secondly, he didn't tell them because he respects the children and their trees, he could ask for their permission to sell them in the first place, but he didn't. He wanted them to keep their trees, and also their culture. I think it's something cultural about those trees that he didn't want the Americans to know about. And finally he honored his culture and he also wanted the children to honor the culture by keeping them, not selling them, but he decided it is their choice sell it or not, because they "own" the trees.

Literary Focus
I think Terry was right when he asked his father about his experiences in the Vietnam war. Although his father said that talking about it doesn't help make things better, I believe he just didn't find the right person to talk and share about his time there. By asking his father about his experiences, he helped his father talk about things that mentally tormented him for years. And it helped Terry's father feels better and it also healed his heart from what he had seen in the Vietnam war. Terry also understands his father better by talking to him and cares about his father more, Terry won't be embarrass of his father again because he understands what his father had been through. I think Terry made a right choice by asking his father about his experiences in the Vietnam war.

OUR FUTURE
OUR FUTURE
“Hurry up, son! You’re gonna be late for work and we won’t be able to find enough oil for today” – shouts the Father, and he flee out of the old wooden door for his daily work at the dirty diamond mine not far from their old house.
“June 17th, 2510,
Just another day of hard working but still no food…..” The Son closes his diary and jumps down the archaic floor that had broken for years even before he was born, and almost fall. He’s a fine young man, at the start of his twenties. He has beautiful blonde hair like his mother, big, blue eyes like his father. He is the strongest kid in the whole village, he’s always the winner in those muscle contests.
“Wait son, you forgot your lunch box, AGAIN!” The Mother calls out to her son with a tired voice from their small kitchen at the back of the house.
“Thanks, mom! Take care, don’t work too hard or you’ll get sicker. We’ll bring you some good food today for you to improve your health.” The Son talks softly to his little mother. He smiles to her, takes her hand, kisses it, takes his lunch box and runs after his dad. He doesn’t know that is the last time he would ever see her alive again.
They are living in the year 2510 of the future, at a place called Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In the past few hundreds years, mankind had created robots that is as smart as people to provide enough workers for the population that is growing non-stop, but it was the stupidest idea of our children in the future.
….Year 2450, there was a mistake in the process of creates a mind for a kind of robots. They had to destroy and throw away a thousand robots of that kind, but they didn’t do it properly. Year 2455, in only 10 years, those robots raised, mesmerizes all kinds of robots to come together and they killed anyone who doesn’t obey and rebels against them….
The Son and his dad are working in the dirty diamond mine. This is a new mine of this area, they didn’t know there is oil here until the robots took over and forced them to dig to find oil. The Son stops digging, looks around, all he could sees is worried faces, dirty clothes, they all try to find as much diamond as they could for food. The funny thing is he’s doing it himself. He was lazy; he doesn’t want to touch or even walk into these dirty mine full of dirt. He had changed, because his dad couldn’t find enough food for his mom and himself when she became sick. He loves his mom a lot, so he begged his dad so he could work here and help him take care of his mom.
“STOP!!!!....” A voice of a robot suddenly brings him back to the mine, he looks up, all he could see is hatred, he curses them, and it is all their faults that his mom is sick.
“You” The robot points at him, he steps forward, all the other people around him look scares, and they don’t want to be involved, indeed they don’t, those robots are nothing but troubles and deaths.
“Where’s your dad????” “I don’t know” “Go look for that old man, fools, and keep the child here, don’t let him run away.” The robot in charged demanded his soldiers. The Son knows what’s going on, he tries to get away from those robots but couldn’t. He wanted to go home to find his mom; his dad can take care of himself but his mom…. She’s sick and weak.
“They caught him…” He thought sadly and looks at his dad but. He doesn’t know what they are going to do with his dad, but when he sees the Executed robot comes, he tries to get out of this robot’s hold and comes to save his dad, but no use. His dad was killed right in front of his eyes, he tries to look away, but the robot wouldn’t let him. He couldn’t see anymore, his eyes are blurry, full of tears, and he couldn’t remember the last time he cried. As soon as the robots release him, he runs as fast as he possibly could home, but all he could find is the bloody body of his mom. He couldn’t make any sounds but his tears just keep dropping. His whole body is shaking; he can’t even stand properly. He lost both of his mom and dad, now he’s all alone in this big world
He stayed there for hours, looking at the bodies of his mom and dad that a good neighbor brought to him. He falls asleep, wakes up, sees the bodies, cries again, and then falls asleep again. After two days, he decides to bring the bodies into his backyard and buries them.
A month after that, he is like a walking mummy. His face is pale, he never speaks to anyone, and the tears keeps falling from his eyes, and he can’t stop them. From a nice, lovely young man who always likes to help others, now there’s nothing in him but hatred. He even planned to run right into those robots to revenge for his parents, he feels like there is a fire in him, encourages him, and gives him inspiration.
Then one day, a person comes and changes his life. He explains himself as part of the rebellions who are working to overthrow the evil rule of the robots. And he would like The Son to join him. “We need more people to get things done and ready for THAT DAY” The Guy says.
The Son thinks about his dad, his mom, and all the terrible things those robots have done to mankind, the people who are still have to live under the cruel rule and deaths. He decides he needs to help them, so he joins them. For months, he goes to work at the mine like nothing’s happening, and in there, he works with rebellions to dig a way into the head quarter of the robots. They also make weapons and persuade people to join them for a better future for mankind. By working with these people, it helps him forget about sadness and makes him fit in and create good relationships with others.
“June 17th, 2515,
Today is the 5 years death ceremony of my parents and I’m going to revenge for them….”
“July 17th, 2515,
WE LOST!!!! Wait for me, mom, dad, I’m coming with you, and all my rebellions friends……”

Weekend Homework
Dear Alex the Genius,
I am hosting a pool party at my house this weekend, which is in district 1, near to our school, and I would love to have you join with me. Don’t tell me, I know that you would probably say no, but let me tell you a few reasons why you shouldn’t miss my pool party. We have a lot of homework from our beloved teachers this weekend, so if you come to my house, we can do the homework together and still have fun. It is way better than staying home, trying to do that homework for all day long, which is BORING!!!! Many brains work better and faster than just one.
You’ll be staying at my home all day and we can many different activities other than just swimming. We can watch movies; but you would have to bring whatever movie you want to watch. While watching it, we can eat popcorn, and still discussing about the homework, if you want to, but I don’t the others would like to. There will be a lot of people hang out with us, don’t worry, I wouldn’t invite you if there are just you and me. After that, we can hangout for a little bit, go shopping for a little bit at Parkson Hung Vuong. Or we will just go around the city, it will be fun.
My mom will cook for us food at lunch; she’ll cook healthy foods that I bet you would love to eat. And you can choose where we’ll be eating dinner, if you guys will be staying that late. We can eat KFC, Lotteria… Whatever you want. Then we can go back to my house and continue our homework. When we finished all of that homework, we can watch some more movies and of course with popcorn.
You can choose to go or not to, but I’m telling you, this will be fun, I’m excited about it. You can go home any time you want, but you wouldn’t want to miss all the fun, right???? Hope to see you there.
Love,
Jessica

My Personal Narrative Essay
I’ve always thought that if I can’t do something, it would be so humiliated, especially in front of a crowd. So even though I was good at English, but I’ve never have the courage to speak because I was afraid that if I say something wrong, people will laugh at me. But an event happened more than a year ago totally that changed the way I think. It also caused me some troubles until now.
It was in the middle of June, I just finished 6th grade at AIS. My mom and dad was pretty busy, they worked all day long, so they didn’t have any chance to take me and my brother anywhere to hang out. So my dad decided to take us to an Aikido class, a kind of martial arts that came from Japan. In that class, they teach us how to roll to protect yourself, we have to roll on our arms, and if you do it right, your body should looks like a circle while you’re rolling, and it takes a really long time to do it properly and you just have to be patient if you couldn’t do it at first. So the teacher teaches us how to roll but I needed to practice more to do it properly with both of my arms. But I didn’t want to practice in class because I thought I would look so stupid and people would laugh at me if I do it wrong, I would be humiliated and my reputation would be gone, so I decided to practice at home. I took a mush out to roll on it. In our class, the kind of mats is half soft half hard, but safe enough to roll, so if I didn’t do it right, I would still be ok. But I practiced at home, which is completely different, the mush at my home was too soft, so if I didn’t do it right, I have a bigger chance of breaking my neck and clavicle bone.
I practiced rolling on it a few times with my right arm for few days, in my room, and I thought the mush was safe enough. So the next day, while I was rolling with my right hand, my brother came in and stayed there to play the computer. And then I decided to I changed to my left arm and roll. At that moment, when I threw my body over, but before that, I didn’t put my left arm in a correct position and I was in a hurry because I was so impatient and angry at myself why I still couldn’t do it with my left arm. So when I landed on the mattress, my left shoulder was so hurt that I couldn’t even open my mouth or scream. I just stayed there, held my left shoulder for a minute or two, and then I cried, so hard, after 15 minutes, I stopped, I told my brother to call my mom and dad and tell them to come home, he did. Then he said when I was rolling, he heard a crack sound, really loud, so I guessed I broke my clavicle bone. My aunt came in to calm me down, but I couldn’t calm down because I was so hurt, I cried again, then I stopped and cried again, just like that for 2 hours until my mom came home to take me to the hospital. I couldn’t move my left arm and she had to tie her scarf around my arm and neck to hold it. In the hospital, the doctor worn for me a thing that can hold my arms to keep them from moving too fast or too much, that way my clavicle bone would heal faster, and I have to wear it until my bone healed, which mean for 2 months. It means that for 2 months, except for when I’m showing, I have to wear that thing all days and nights, sometimes it was really itchy but I couldn’t take it off, and I must not play any sports or practice martial arts for at least 6 months.
For those 2 months, I couldn’t do anything by myself, included shower, brush my teeth, or eat, because I’m left-handed and now my left shoulder broke so I couldn’t use my left hand. If my mom was home she would do it for me, or else my aunt would do it. And when I sleep, I couldn’t turn right or left, every night, I would have 2 pillows on each sides of me to prevent me from turning. Because I couldn’t turn, I had to stay at 1 position for many hours; it was so uncomfortable that I had trouble sleeping for 2 months. It was a nightmare for me, I was very angry at myself for done such a stupid thing. And after I returned to AIS for 7th grade, I couldn’t join the basketball team, because I might break my bone again when it wasn’t hard enough support my body if I might fall really hard and fast.
After 6 months, I took Aikido again, but this time, it was harder for me to roll with my left arm again because I was really scared. Whenever I’m about to roll on my left arm, I always see myself holding my left shoulder and crying, so somehow my mind reacts to those kinds of pictures and feelings and it doesn’t want to feel that pain again, but I was managed to over come the fear with lots of helps from my dad. I now I learned that it’s nothing wrong or embarrass if you couldn’t or did something wrong. Now I’m no longer feel stupid if I can’t or do something wrong, it’s a part of learning, so in class I speak a lot of English and not feel embarrass about it, even though I said something wrong. You can never learn something new if you don’t try and make mistakes

Flower on Algernon
Connect Re-read the last few lines in Part 1. What do you think about people who dislike others who are different from them?
I think that we people are all the same. We always afraid of what we don't understand and different from us. These people in the factory are the same, they were afraid of Charlie because he's different, he changed. He became so smart that other people jealous with him. I think they're wrong, they shouldn't make fun of Charlie because he was dumb, that shows they were only be friends with Charlie to make fun of him, so they weren't very good friends. And now Charlie's smarter, they should be happy for him, well if they're good friends. I think those kind of people are really self-ish because all they care about is them, they don't care about others feelings. It's too bad that Charlie think they're his friends, they only used him for their own feelings.
